Elsevier Launches Next Generation Brain Atlas With NeuroApps: MRI Atlas of Human White Matter
Elsevier Launches Next Generation Brain Atlas With NeuroApps: MRI Atlas of Human White Matter
Waltham, MA (PRWEB) March 12, 2012
Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the release of NeuroApps: MRI Atlas of Human White Matter, the first in a new series of apps created for the iPad™. Based on the MRI Atlas of White Matter by Kenichi Oishi, Andreia V. Faria, Peter C M van Zijl and Susumu Mori, this interactive application re-makes the atlas for a new generation of neuroscience researchers, clinicians and students.
“It is an honor for Elsevier to build, on the work of these groundbreaking neuroscience researchers, a truly interactive application for the iPad™,” said Suzanne BeDell, Managing Director, Science and Technology Books, Elsevier. “With this new product we hope to free researchers and others to work and study more nimbly and creatively.”
Using NeuroApps: MRI Atlas of Human White Matter, researchers, clinicians and students are able to find, visualize, and learn to identify the major pathways through the brain and their proximity to key neuroanatomical structures. The app also allows the user to scroll through the brain in sequence to follow a tract from beginning to end. While based upon the images from the print book, in the app they have been digitally enhanced and the resulting 4-color images are much sharper on the iPad device which also allows image zooming for more detailed study.
“This platform allows us to interact with the contents of our atlas in a much more efficient manner,” said Dr. Susumu Mori, one of the creators of the atlas. “It provides an intuitive graphics interface, which is often essential when we are exploring anatomy.”
Available exclusively through iTunes™, the app has a full complement of functionalities:
Format allows viewer to compare coronal, horizontal, and sagittal sections in one view
Two types of stereotaxic coordinates (Talairach and MNI coordinates) are provided to define brain locations.
Includes both MRI and DTI images and allows the user to switch between MRI and DTI view for any location in the brain
Fifty three white matter structures, 38 cortical areas, and 22 deep gray matter structures are defined and labeled. In addition, locations of 11 white matter tracts and 36 cytoarchitectonic areas are defined. These structures can be interactively superimposed on the MRI/DTI images.
The trajectories of the tracts can be followed sequentially through the brain
“Digital media, particularly the new generation of tablets, have created a platform perfectly suited to high visual book content,” said David Marques, VP Business Development, Workflow Solutions, Science and Technology Books, Elsevier. “In addition to NeuroApps: MRI Atlas of Human White Matter, we have several other apps being developed based on classic Elsevier books including ChemApps: Strategic Applications of Named Reactions, which is publishing later in March and is based upon the book Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis by Laszlo Kurti and Barbara Czako. Soon after, Elsevier will release an app based upon Chemical Resistance Database, to be followed by apps based upon Pipeline Rules of Thumb, Fundamentals of Forensic Science, Molecular Biology, Computer Architecture, Television Production, Policing in America, and Photoshop for Photographers. These other apps will be released in the coming weeks and months.”

IT Governance Expert Launches Updated Data Security Guide
IT Governance Expert Launches Updated Data Security Guide
London, England (PRWEB) April 25, 2012
Alan Calder, Chief Executive of IT Governance (http://www.itgovernance.co.uk/), is today launching an updated version of the industry-leading book: ‘IT Governance: An International Guide to Data Security and ISO27001/ISO27002’ (http://www.itgovernance.co.uk/products/4).
Co-authored with IT Governance’s Training and Consultancy Director Steve Watkins, ‘IT Governance: An International Guide to Data Security and ISO27001/ISO27002’ is the fifth edition of the definitive compliance text (previously called: ‘IT Governance: A Manager’s Guide to Data Security and ISO27001/ISO27002’). The book, published by Kogan Page, provides information and advice to help senior managers and board directors manage all aspects of information security and assist senior staff in achieving compliance with cybersecurity standard ISO27001. This new edition will replace the earlier editions of the book as the basis for the UK Open University’s postgraduate course on information security.
Calder says: ‘Board directors are ultimately responsible for a company’s cybersecurity and need to be engaged in information security management, which includes understanding the speed of growth in the information economy and the urgent need to adopt IT governance best practice.’
Calder continues: ‘We have fully updated the book to ensure readers are completely aware of the current cybersecurity threats and the latest regulatory and technological developments throughout the world. This fifth edition includes new material on key international markets, including the UK, North America, the European Union and the Asia-Pacific region.
‘The proliferation of increasingly complex, sophisticated and global threats to information security, in combination with the compliance requirements of a flood of computer- and privacy-related regulation around the world, is driving organisations to take a more strategic view of information security,’ says Calder. ‘It has become clear that hardware-, software- or vendor-driven solutions to individual information security challenges are, on their own, dangerously inadequate. This book seeks to help all organisations strengthen their defences.’
Matthew Smith, Publishing Director at Kogan Page, says: ‘For many companies, their intellectual property can often be more valuable than their physical assets. Having an effective IT governance strategy in place can protect this intellectual property, reducing theft and infringement, and also enabling organisations to fully utilise their intellectual property’s value. Bringing together the most relevant international material into one authoritative book, including details of the creation of the International Board for IT Governance Qualifications, ‘IT Governance: An International Guide to Data Security and ISO27001/ISO27002’ is an essential resource for any organisation that needs to understand information security risk.’
‘IT Governance: An International Guide to Data Security and ISO27001/ISO27002’ (ISBN: 9780749464851) is available to buy now at £45 (US$ 74.37/€51.70) through the IT Governance website at: http://www.itgovernance.co.uk/products/4.
NOTES TO EDITORS:
IT Governance Ltd is the one-stop shop for books, tools, training and consultancy for governance, risk management and compliance. The company is a leading authority on data security and IT governance for business and the public sector. Graduate Launches Discount Card that Saves More Than Just Money
Graduate Launches Discount Card that Saves More Than Just Money
(PRWEB UK) 13 December 2011
Young entrepreneur, and recent graduate, Dan Taylor has just launched The Giving Card; a great way for consumers to save money and also raise funds for good causes. Dan left University and instead of applying for endless graduate jobs, he started a nationwide company which helps businesses, supports charities and saves the general public hundreds of pounds every month.
The Giving Card offers discounts across six categories: restaurants; nightlife; arts and entertainment; health, fitness and beauty; professional services and online. It differs from existing discount cards in that it’s not industry specific and that everyone can save money whilst giving to charity. Cardholders pay an annual membership of just £34.95 – which includes a £10 donation to the charity of their choice, whilst members have access to thousands of offers across the UK.
Dan, 23, recently named as one of the Future 100 Young Social Entrepreneurs for 2011, explains: “I wanted to be my own boss and as I looked round for a new idea I noticed there was a growing trend, as the recession took hold, for businesses to discount their products and give added value. At the same time the credit squeeze was taking its toll on charities, who were suffering as donations dropped. David Cameron was promoting the Big Society initiative and I thought I could do something that could tick all the right boxes.”
High street businesses who have already joined The Giving Card are Red Letter Days, Halfords, Interflora, Zipcar, Choice Hotels, Pizza Hut, Hotel du Vin, Destination Skin, Las Iguanas, Papa John’s, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Johnson Dry Cleaners and many more. There are also online deals with the likes of Marks and Spencer, Debenhams and British Airways. The Giving Card has also attracted the attention of some of the largest charities in the country including Mencap, MIND, Christian Aid, RSPCA, Cure Cancer, Dyslexia Action and Kids Company.
Dan adds: “It’s a no-brainer. Charities pay nothing, businesses sign up for free and anyone who buys the card can make their money back within a few days. I wanted to ensure that The Giving Card gave back to local communities and charities, which is why with every single card purchased, there is a donation to charity.”
Offers include 2for1 or 50% off restaurants, discounts in nightclubs and bars, deals on theatre tickets, money off at gyms, half price haircuts, discounted hotel stays and many more. This is just a taste of what promotions The Giving Card has to offer, without the need for printing any vouchers. A full list of businesses, charities and discounts can be found via the website at http://www.thegivingcard.co.uk.

PianoBuyer.com Launches New ?Piano-Buying Stories? Feature
PianoBuyer.com Launches New “Piano-Buying Stories” Feature
Jamaica Plain, MA (PRWEB) December 15, 2011
PianoBuyer.com, host of “Piano Buyer” magazine, has launched a new, ongoing blog feature—“Piano-Buying Stories”—in which individuals who have purchased a piano and those who sell them share unusual and touching stories about the piano-buying experience. “Pianos are unique among consumer goods,” says Larry Fine, editor, “in the extent to which buying one combines hardheaded choices about price and features with emotional responses involving art and passion. For many, buying a piano is more like finding a marriage partner than like buying furniture or appliances.”
This theme is well illustrated by the blog’s lead story, “The Piano Match,” by Nancy M. Williams, a creative writer and founder of Reflections on a Grand Passion, an online magazine for students of adult piano lessons. Williams describes her year-long search for a grand piano to replace an upright that no longer meets her needs. In the process she assesses the personalities of dozens of new and used instruments, rejecting some because of their undesirable tonal qualities, others for their unresponsive actions—and one used piano because its owner’s alcoholism reminds her of her father. Visiting the local Steinway dealer, Williams says, “I felt as if I had been set loose in a roomful of eligible bachelors, with [my teacher] Stephen not unlike my brother, intent on fostering a suitable match.” In the end, Williams finds and marries the piano of her dreams. “I commune with my beloved,” she rhapsodizes. “I have found my piano match. I revel in the sensation of being one with its crystalline sound.”
If “buying a piano is like dating, owning one is like marriage,” reminds Perri Knize in her piece, “The Surprising Thing About Pianos.” Knize, author of the book “Grand Obsession: A Piano Odyssey,” writes, “After a brief honeymoon, you find that your piano is far from perfect. She has bad hair and bad breath days. She has mornings when her voice is shrill and cutting, and evenings when she hisses, ‘Not tonight, dear.’ . . . You wonder whatever happened to the beautiful bride you brought home, the dream you fell for and believed you would possess forever.” Her prescription? “Once you’ve found your ‘perfect’ piano, accept its whims, find the good in it—just as you do with your spouse—and when it shows its flaws, look the other way. . . . Then it will be more likely to come back around to giving you those treasured moments of pure transcendence.”
Selling a piano, too, has its special challenges, fulfillments, and memorable moments. In “Piano-Buying Stories,” one piano dealer tells of his encounters with famous clients for whom cost seems no object, such as computer pioneer Steve Jobs and rock star Rod Stewart. Another tells of an instrument that was not sold but donated, and helped launch the career of a promising young musician. Several others share touching or humorous moments involving the importance of a piano in a customer’s life.
“Piano Buyer” is a semiannual publication devoted to the purchase of new, used, and restored pianos and digital pianos. Available free online at http://www.PianoBuyer.com, it can also be purchased in print, in color on glossy paper, from the website and in bookstores. Distributed by IPG. ISBN 9781929145324. List Price: $ 24.95.

Truly Mobile Banking: Plastyc Launches Smartphone Apps for the Underbanked
Truly Mobile Banking: Plastyc Launches Smartphone Apps for the Underbanked
Las Vegas, NE (PRWEB) March 13, 2012
UPside Visa is Plastyc’s award-winning prepaid program offering a premium suite of affordable banking services tailored for the up-and-coming youth and under-banked markets.
What’s unique about the UPside Visa mobile apps for Android and iPhone are how they meet a complete range of personal banking needs, activating a new account, signing up for direct deposit, redeeming cash back points, paying bills, transferring funds to friends, issuing paper checks and more — using just a smartphone. Of course, the apps enable the basics, such as checking balances and reviewing transaction histories, as well.
“Over 75 percent of our customers have smartphones. Now, with these apps, our prepaid cardholders truly have the power of a bank account in their phones. Walking into a bank branch and even logging into a computer no longer are necessary for good banking,” said Patrice Peyret, CEO of Plastyc.
Plastyc’s mobile apps can be downloaded immediately by searching “UPside” in the Android Market at market.android.com. The iPhone version will be available from the Apple AppStore in a few weeks.
In addition to using their UPside card anywhere Visa debit is accepted, the apps let cardholders use their smartphones to do the following:
Manage accounts: Verify cash and cash-back point balances, see latest transactions and prior months’ statements, activate a new card or suspend a lost card, configure alerts.
Load funds: redeem a Green Dot MoneyPak®, access the account’s direct deposit number and send it to an employer or other payer.
Save: set money aside immediately into the account’s Rainy Day Reserve, or define a savings goal and program the account to set money aside automatically to reach that goal.
Pay on-the-go: pay online, send paper checks, reimburse a friend, add airtime minutes to prepaid phones.
Find: the nearest store to buy a MoneyPak or the nearest pharmacy to get discounted prescription drugs.
Get help: send customer service requests, call customer service or find answers to common questions.
Redeem rewards: redeem cash back points, monitor progress toward Premium status (in which all service fees are waived), get discounts on prescription drugs.
The apps include the highest levels of security to protect the account information. For instance, the apps encrypt all local data and do not store or transmit sensitive cardholder data. The apps require an additional password for all spending transactions, and they log out the user out automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity.
For more about the UPside card, visit http://www.upsidecard.com.
The Android app can be found on the Google Play Store.

IBW Launches 4G Networks Across Central America with Alepo Online Charging System
IBW Launches 4G Networks Across Central America with Alepo Online Charging System
Austin, TX (PRWEB) October 27, 2011
Alepo and Latin American service provider IBW announced today the successful commercial launch of multiple 4G networks in Central America using Alepo’s LTE-ready 4G Online Charging System. With it, IBW is able to offer prepaid data and voice services over WiMAX today and LTE in the future.
The investment in 4G technology represents a major step forward in the region and reinforces IBW’s position as a market leader. By deploying a convergent charging and billing system that supports WiMAX and LTE, IBW can readily launch new services over LTE as they become available without replacing the existing core network, resulting in lower CapEx and faster time to market.
“In such a transitional period for emerging 4G technologies, it was crucial to implement a solution that can readily adapt to changes in technology, market conditions and regulations,” said Paul Ives Choiseul, IBW CTO. “The flexibility of Alepo’s Online Charging System reassures us of our investment, even as technologies evolve and our subscriber base grows.”
IBW will utilize Alepo’s flexible platform to offer a wide range of convergent 4G services to corporate and residential customers across Central America and has recently launched its consumer brand, Japi (http://www.soyjapi.com) in Costa Rica and El Salvador, with Guatemala to follow soon.
Alepo’s 3GPP-compliant Online Charging System (OCS) is a convergent charging & billing system that handles the real-time rating, charging and balance management of all IP-based services. Part of Alepo’s comprehensive Service Enabler platform, it incorporates business management applications such as revenue assurance and voucher management to create an end-to-end, carrier-grade solution.
The flexible, future-ready solution can support multiple radio access technologies (RANs), facilitating the addition of LTE to IBW’s existing WiMAX network or a complete migration to LTE in the future.
“With simultaneous deployments in multiple markets, IBW has proven to be an ambitious and forward-thinking market player,” said Jonathan Garini, Alepo Vice President of Products. “Alepo was able to meet IBW’s aggressive timetable and deliver a market-ready core solution that offers an immediate and continuous ROI.”
About IBW
IBW, an emerging service provider across Central America, is positioning itself to provide high-quality commercial and residential services, including voice, data and video, over a licensed 802.16e WiMAX network. Today, the company has a presence in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Costa Rica and El Salvador and operates its 4G consumer services under the “Japi” brand.
