Light production in fireflies is due to a chemical reaction called bioluminescence. This process occurs in specialized light-emitting organs on a firefly’s lower abdomen. The enzyme luciferase acts on luciferin, in the presence of magnesium ions, ATP, and oxygen to produce light. The authors of this trial found that the interflash interval in fireflies does not change its length, making it similar to the Southeast Asian synchronizer Pteroptyx cribellata and different from Pteroptyx malaccae, which can change its interval.

Eurekamag.com presents a review on synapses which are structures in the nervous system that permit neurons to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another cell. It covers the reception of functional innervation from specific spinal nerves by muscles. Recordings from muscle nerves during excitation of individual spinal nerves gave results similar to the tension recordings, indicating that even at early developmental stages muscle nerves do not contain substantial numbers of inappropriate axons. Most limb muscles or primitive muscle masses thus become functionally innervated at the same time with no clearly defined proximo-distal sequence of limb innervation. While the majority of the varicosities did not synapse on the muscle fibres, terminals containing small agranular vesicles occasionally formed specialized neuromuscular contacts. Other research has isolated a Caenorhabditis elegans gene, which encodes a meiosis-specific component of chromosome cores with some similarity to a yeast lateral element protein. Antibodies raised against the Caenorhabditis elegans gene localize the protein to condensing chromosomes in early prophase I and to the cores of both synapsed and desynapsed chromosomes. In RNA interference experiments, chromosomes appear to condense normally in the absence of detectable protein but fail to synapse and form chiasmata, indicating that the Caenorhabditis elegans gene is essential for these processes.

Variations in sequences were attributable to substitution such as transition and transversion or deletion events. Based on dendrogram inferred from ITS sequences, Korean lotuses and a Chinese lotus were definitely divided. All nine used lotuses were diverse, although they differed between themselves by the quantity of genotypes. The statistical processing showed 55 individual genotypes in a group of 81 examined strains, which denoted a high discriminative potentiality of the typing system. On the basis of the cluster analysis, the genotypes were shared between eleven main groups. The strains belonging to one genotype group were found to originate, nevertheless, from one natural focus.

“I just love the feeling of buying good stuff for cheap price,” says Luna Parker. “I have been deal shopping since I was a college student. The idea of starting her own deal site came up earlier this year, when the economy went really bad, and Luna found more and more of her friends asking where to get the latest coupons and deals: “I realized that although there are many deal sites out there, most of them are focused on electronics and computers. I didn’t see any good deal sites that are designed for women and targeting to their daily purchases. I thought: ‘since I am spending time collecting these deal information anyways, why not organize them on my own website and share?’ So I did. I created dealmoon.com.”

Everyday Luna would put information onto her site about latest deals and coupons which are interesting for women, for example a 15% coupon at Macy’s, $ 150 drop on a Gucci watch on Amazon.com, a free gift set with Cosmetics purchase, 20%-40% off Baby diapers, etc. Gradually she got more and more visitors to the site. Some would even check the site every few hours to stay on top of the new items, because they know great deals can expire or sellout very quickly.

“Now I have almost 1,000 visitors to my site everyday and the number is growing.” Luna smiles, “five days ago I received a Thank You e-mail from a user who took advantage of a post on my site and had just bought a ½ carat diamond ring for $ 129 during a 3-hours price drop on overstock.com. Now the price has gone back up to $ 599! The best part was that the ring actually arrived in her hands the day after she placed the order, exactly on her second wedding anniversary! Believe me, this is the most rewarding thing for me: my hard work all pays off when my users get a good deal from my site and are excited about it!”

ThreatMetrix™, the fastest growing provider of cloud-based fraud prevention solutions that do not require personally identifiable information (PII), today released data on mobile transaction volume that took place during the 2011 Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping days.

Findings showed the vast majority of mobile transactions were processed on an Android-powered device (58%) on both days. iPhone came in second, generating 32% of mobile device transactions on Black Friday and 30% of mobile transactions on Cyber Monday; the remaining transactions were split between Palm, Windows, BlackBerry and others.

This year’s Cyber Monday boasted a 10.6% increase in mobile transactions over the 2011 Black Friday. In total, ThreatMetrix found that mobile transactions were up an impressive 591% year-over-year during the holiday shopping season.

“The increase in total mobile purchasing may be attributed to Android and Windows offering a larger product line with features that are now comparable to the interface of the iPhone,” said Alisdair Faulkner, chief products officer, ThreatMetrix. “One differentiating factor in mobile purchases versus other forms of purchasing is the propensity for them to be intention-driven. Rather than using mobile devices to comparison shop, people who perform mobile transactions often know what they’re going to buy, thus increasing conversion rates.”

Transaction Trends by Day and Channel

ThreatMetrix also monitored mobile and desktop transactions by day, from October 30 through November 28, as well as by time on Cyber Monday. Compared to the beginning of the month, daily volume of mobile-based transactions doubled leading up to Cyber Monday.

“Mobile transactions can often be a factor of convenience, as we saw the majority of Cyber Monday purchases via this channel happened after the work day ended and consumers were likely in commute,” said Faulkner.

Over the past year, there has been a 50% increase in transactions that originated from a mobile device as a percentage of total web and mobile transactions combined; from 2% in 2010 to 3% of total purchases in 2011. While iPhone’s share of mobile transactions decreased by 35%, Windows increased by 19% and Android mobile volume increased by 661%.

Faulkner added that retailers should be aware of the five primary fraud threats this holiday season, especially with the mobile channel becoming more popular: mobile device spoofing, use of botnets and malware, cookie-wiping, IP address cloaking, and the use of virtual private networks (VPNs). The growing trend towards natural foods and healthy living choices is about to get a hands on test from a skeptical baby boomer who has had enough with yo-yo dieting and junk food.

Remember Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me movie and his experiment to see what would happen if he only ate food from McDonalds? At the end of 30 days, he was so sick he was advised to stop the experiment.

But what would happen if – instead of fast food – someone were to eat only good-for-you food? Nutritious food, organic fruits and vegetables supplemented, when needed, by the right vitamins and minerals.

That’s the quest veteran journalist Mike Wendland has begun with a project called Super Healthy Me, to be chronicled online through a website and blog that will allow people to follow the project through every possible form of social media.

And that’s only fitting as Wendland, a correspondent on NBC-TV stations across the country since 1994, is known as PC Mike because of his expertise in computers, gadgets and the Internet.

“I have no idea what to expect,” said Wendland. “I will stick to this plan for at least 90 days and detail every part of it. I suspect there’s a lot of other people like me who are wondering of all this natural food hype is the real deal.”

Wendland got his inspiration from Super Size Me, and more recent films such as Food, Inc., King Corn and Food Matters.

“We have an epidemic of obesity in this nation because the majority of food we buy in the supermarket and sold at most restaurants is simply not very good for us,” he contends. “We have chickens raised in windowless warehouses. Cows are fed corn instead of grasses and then infused with massive amounts of antibiotics to keep them from getting sick. Commercially grown fruits and vegetables are sprayed with insecticides, fungicides and poisons that contaminate the very ground they are planted in. No wonder we’re sick and fat.”

Wendland, at 65 and now approaching his senior citizen years, has fought a lifelong battle with obesity, losing weight by dieting and exercise, only to gain it back.

“I know diets don’t work so I’m out to discover what will really happen if I make a change involving the type of food I eat.,” he says. “I’m going to test all the claims we keep hearing from these natural food boosters. I know what the old way got me. Let’s see if their way is really any better.”

Working with a nutrition coach, a medical doctor and a fitness adviser, he will follow a plan that involves whole, nutrient-rich foods, organically grown, supplemented as needed by vitamins, herbs and minerals.

“I’m as addicted to sugar as the next person, he said. “The thought of limiting my extra strong coffee intake is almost giving me the shakes. And I can’t believe life can exist without burgers. But I’m going to be so public with this that readers of my blogs and viewers of my YouTube videos are going to hold me accountable. Just what will happen if I only eat good food? We’ll all find out together.”

He will also incorporate lots of exercise into a fitness routine, including spinning classes, running, weight-lifting and endurance sports such as long distance cycling.

Wendland will blog his experiences at SuperHealthyMe.com and disseminate his every move a variety of social media tools. He will use Twitter to post the nutrition totals of each meal, the FourSquare location service to show his whereabouts, the photo sharing service Flickr to show what he is eating and YouTube videos for documentary-style reporting on his wellness quest.

Wendland began the project Nov. 3, 2011. He will be on the new program during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season.

“I lot of people think I’m nuts for starting it now,” he said. “But I want the next phase of my lie to be vibrant and healthy. So if the claims about natural food are correct, then I want to find out. And there’s no better time than now.”

Often business owners will jump ahead of themselves, print a few QR Codes, stick them somewhere and hope something happens. Yet for QR Codes to be effective, they must be the end result of a well thought overall strategy that is based on plenty of market research.

2.    Not testing QR Codes

A surprising mistake business owners make is not testing their codes. Although QR Codes are free to generate, media ads are paid for so if a code is faulty, one will have wasted a lot of money on the ads.

3.    Not having mobile-friendly website or landing page.

It’s a shame to invest time and resources into a QR Code campaign yet not optimize the website for mobile users. If mobile customers land on a page that they have difficulty viewing, they will hit the cancel button and forget about the site.

4.    Not implementing a tracking system

Most offline business owners are not used to tracking their marketing campaigns because most offline marketing methods cannot be tracked. However QR Codes are computer generated so they can be tracked. Without a tracking system, a business is unable to monitor which codes are working best and if they are achieving the desired campaign goals.

5.    Using long urls

One of the mistakes business owners make when generating QR Codes is using long website address URLs. The result is that when someone scans the code, their mobile browser finds it difficult to open that address. The best way to handle long URLs is to use link shorteners like bit.ly or owl.ly.

The CAS Calc P11 offers four different input formats that can be set in preferences: P11, Maple, MuPAD, and TI 89/92. A picker display allows the user to rotate the wheel to choose which of four different programming syntaxes the app will operate under. A second wheel permits the selection of the floating-point format used for printing: standard, scientific, or engineering. The integer base for printing can be selected on the third wheel: base 10 (decimal), base 16 (hexadecimal)), or base 8 (octal). Last, the fourth wheel sets one of five different types of audio feedback for keystrokes or no feedback.
