PostHeaderIcon Why are desktops better than laptops at gaming?

i can see why up-to-date desktops are better but my Gateway desktop from like the 90′s runs games better than my laptop i got around april of last year. the gateway is using Windows Professional 2000 and the laptop uses vista.

im not exactly sure what the specs on the gateway are but they can’t be better than the laptop can they?

first of all it depends on the games you’re running, BUT

when compared to laptops, desktops normally have faster processors, more ram, and faster hard drives (up until recently laptop hard drives were limited to 5400rpm where as desktop HDDs have been 7200 rpm or greater for a long time.) On top of that, only the best graphics cards can fit into desktops. hence why desktops run games better than laptops.

the size limitation and heat dissipation problems in laptops prevent them from running the fastest processors and having superior ram amounts. as time goes on, laptops will get closer to desktops, but they will never surpass desktops’ ability to run games.

Because you can have a faster hard drive. You can run two video cards . You have more power. You basically have more of everything…More room to play…

laptops have much worse cooling than desktops, and have equipment designed to conserve power. Laptops overheat very easily, and are equipped with slower processors to reduce heat. Overheating affects performance and computer life greatly. Also, windows 2000 takes a lot less computer power to run than vista, so there’s more power left over for the games.

Its up to the ram and video card mainly. Also windows vista takes up so much computer usage, slowing everything else down. Thats why windows 7 was released, and for hundreds of other reasons. Theres so many things that could be slowin your vista down too. To many programs running at startup (start>run>msconfig>startup) Mainly its the computer taking up most of the resources though. Check ctrl+alt+delete and go to performance. If the computer usage is higher than a few percent, or jumping up, its the ram. To much going on. Like I said, close down all useless programs, or upgrade the ram? Also it could be a virus.

The 2 main things that make a computer faster for gaming are the processor and the video card. While laptops can have pretty fast processors they almost all rely on onboard video as the videocard. Obviously u cant stuff a gigantic highend ATI Radeon 4890 or 5870 or a GeForce 275 or 285 in a little bitty laptop. Heck the cards alone weigh about the same as a laptop. Plus the overheating issue would be a concern even if u scaled down the size of a videocard. Hope this helps.

Usually the newer laptop will probably have the faster CPU whether it be Intel or AMD, BUT the make or break hardware between the two would be the graphics card. Desktops are bigger so you have space to play with them more where the laptops have to try and squeeze every single square inch of the space it has.

    Example:
Desktops have multiple RAM slots, up to 4+
Laptops however usually only has 2 slots.

Desktops have more fans and space to place video/graphics cards.
Laptops usually have integrated cards or the higher end ones are prone to overheating because lack of air circulation.

A laptop isn’t really meant to be better than desktops.
You buy laptops for PORTABILITY, not high end performance that desktops offer.
