Is it possible to refurbish an ancient PC from 1996 to meet today’s technological needs?

I just got handed down an old Compaq Persario from the olden PC days. I need to know what would be more practical and cost efficient– fixing this one up, or just buying a new machine.

The compaq has 64 MB of RAM (laughable, I know)
AMD 64 processor.
12 GB HD.
Windows 98 OS

If fixing it up would be more cost efficient, how would I go about doing it?

You wont be able to fix that up that much. If your lucky you might be able to find a faster processor. But even so your going to be so far out of date.

Motherboards change the socket for the cpu’s, so with new technology comes new sockets etc.

As far as upgrading memory, you can still purchase memory that will work in the machine, but its a matter of finding out what the maximum speed/size the motherboard will take.

It all depends on what you use your cpu for, lately you can find really cheap used P4’s. I suggest that if you dont need anything too spectacular.

So basically I got a refurbished pc that comes with a fresh genuine windows 7 installed on it but no windows DVDs. Now, I’m not sure if this is how it’s done nowadays but I’d like to have the original windows DVDs.

No, but you may be able to contact the PC’s manufacturer and get restore discs for a reasonable price.

To me it would depend on the cost and how long the guarantee was for. I bought my son a refurbished PS2 from gamestation and it had a years guarantee and it was perfect.

I’ve had luck with www.Dell.com after getting there, go to section "outlet", tell it what you are looking for (printer, laptop, comp etc) then you select what you want by refurbished, scratched, returne unused, so forth… I’m sure most computer site have similar sections for refurbished.

I refurbish pc’s and sell them on again, i need a name for my company to set up a website. It needs to sounds good and incourperate the fact that i refurbish computers but i also sell monitors etc. And it needs to me rememerable. Any ideas?

I am thinking of buying this from tigerdirect. It only cost 170 bucks. But i have a question about the cpu. I want to upgrade to a dual core amd. Can someone tell me if the cpu that is already installed in the pc is soldered on? Because i know name brand pc’s do things so that you cant upgrade and stuff. And can someone give me step by step instructions on how to install the cpu. I know how to set it in the socket and needs to match the am2 socket but do i just socket it in and the pc work or what?

The CPU is not soldered on. That hasn’t happened for years (10+).
You can upgrade the processor, but it needs to be a low wattage (45 – 65w) processor. It only has a 250w power supply, so don’t expect much to be upgraded without upgrading the power supply first.

I’m in the market for a new computer, and when I go to well known stores online they offer many refurbished pc’s. Would anyone consider one? What about the not so well known brands, are they just as good as the rest? Please advise, boxing week sales are almost over!!!

"Refurbished" usually means something was wrong with it before, and it was sent back to the manufacture, fixed, and is now being sold at a reduced price. Make sure you’re getting a full warranty on your product if you do decide to buy one, as sometimes something wasn’t quite fixed, or may break again. However, they are generally in good shape, and will save you some money.

The not-so-well-known brands are usually not that much worse than the others. However, because they are smaller companies, they may not offer the same level of tech support as the "main" companies, and will not even have as many users you can ask, either. But because most computers are the same overall, you can just ask on general tech boards (or here).

When buying one, ask the store’s return policy on computer systems. If they have one, give it a week, and see how you like it. Check to see if it runs your programs, doesn’t crash or freeze up right of the box, and so on. In the end, the choice is up to you.
