ICT Suppliers Need To Devote Greater Thought To Mid-Market Enterprises

(PRWEB) November 21, 2004

Mid-market enterprises are a poorly known segment in EuropeÂ?s information and communication technology (ICT) market. Indeed, since these organizations are neither particularly large (no more than 999 employees), nor particularly small (no fewer than 100 employees), they often fail to grasp the attention of ICT suppliers. However, as this report examines, ICT suppliers need to devote greater thought to this segment. The willingness of mid-market enterprises to switch supplier loyalties is growing.

This report focuses on how mid-market enterprises relate to their fixed telecom operators, and in particular to national incumbent operators. It draws on a subset of results from the 2004 European Mid-Market Communications Survey. This comprehensive survey of ICT purchasing trends, completed in April 2004, focused on mid-market enterprises located in EuropeÂ?s top five economies: France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Key report findings include:

-Equipment and software manufacturers and their channel partners are more trusted and influential than fixed telecom operators in ICT decision-making.

-Among the top five European incumbents, BTÂ?s mid-market customers are most satisfied with the services they receive, while Telecom ItaliaÂ?s mid-market customers are the least satisfied.

-Alternative fixed operators are finally winning influence and trust among mid-market enterprises, with trust in FastWeb as a telecom supplier eclipsing Telecom Italia in Italy and nearly matching the incumbent as perceived industry leader.

Service Providers Focus on VoIP Access Infrastructurea

(PRWEB) November 24, 2004

Service providers of all sizes are focusing on offering VoIP services to consumers and businesses. Packet-based networks are more cost-effective to deploy, service and maintain, which reduces upfront capital expenditures as well as operational expenditures over time. More importantly, VoIP services allow operators to create and deploy new and enhanced services that allow them to differentiate themselves and increase top-line revenue.

There has been a lot of innovation at the core of the network with softswitches, media gateways and at the application layer with hosted IP telephony and new video services. However, until now providers have not placed much emphasis on customer-premises equipment (CPE). The last mile has emerged as the largest obstacle to deploying VoIP services. Providers must develop intelligent endpoints to address quality of service (QoS), security and other challenges to deploy this technology to the masses and enable it to evolve into a mainstream technology.

This report outlines initiatives undertaken by specific service providers in regard to their access infrastructure. We interviewed European incumbent operators and North American RBOCs and created two interesting case studies about FastWeb in Italy and Vonage in the United States. We have identified operatorsÂ? VoIP services strategies and timelines for both consumers and businesses, along with the features and functionalities required on the devices to support the planned services.

PostHeaderIcon FBI Scholarship Draws Record Number of High School and College Students

FBI Scholarship Draws Record Number of High School and College Students

Ft. Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) January 18, 2006

High school and college students looking for easy scholarship money are registering in record numbers to compete in the FBI Common Knowledge Challenge scholarship. For the first time in its five year history, the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation (http://www.cksf.org) registered over 2,000 students in one day to compete for the $ 500 scholarship set to begin on January 28th and run through February.

The Foundation, which averages approximately 500 new registrations a day, attributes the current spike to the popularity of the scholarship topics and the help of Fastweb.com, a scholarship matching service. “Students love it when they find out they can win scholarship money by participating in an online quiz about the FBI, NASCAR and the Bible instead of writing long time consuming essays,” said Daryl Hulce CKSF founder. “It’s a twenty-first century scholarship program delivered over the internet. Registration is painless and most people can finish a quiz in less than five minutes.”

The program attracts a wide range of participants because the format gives every student a fair and equal chance at winning. A person does not have to be an A student to win this type of scholarship because the quiz topics are announced in advance.    For scholarships such as the FBI Challenge, all the questions are from information found on the FBI website (http://www.fbi.gov). “We have found a way to get people to read every word of a website,” said Hulce. “It is a niche discovered after offering a scholarship based on the Miami Dolphins website.”

The FBI Challenge was developed with the help of Jeff Green, the Miami FBI Community Outreach Coordinator. The program began as an effort to increase awareness of the FBI’s mission, roles and responsibilities in the South Florida community and has grown into one of the largest national high school and college scholarship programs offered by the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation.

A single registration provides participants access to all Common Knowledge Scholarships for which they qualify. Each person may continue to take the quizzes from high school through graduate school or until they have reached a maximum of $ 5,000. Even parents may register and participate to try and win scholarship money for their children. Parents winning a CKSF scholarship may transfer the award to their child’s college bill or have the money held for a child not yet in college.

Students and parents may register at the Foundation’s website http://www.cksf.org. As with all CKSF contests, participants log on to the internet and take a series of multiple-choice quizzes. The winner is determined by a combination of correct answers and time. Results are updated regularly on the CKSF website so participants can see where they rank at all times. Participants do not have to wait to be notified if they have won as the ranking is automatically calculated and posted.

Registration is free and now open at http://www.cksf.org for the FBI, NASCAR, and Bible Common Knowledge Scholarships. There are no essays, minimum grade point average or financial background requirements.

Developed and administered at Nova Southeastern University’s Fischler School of Education, the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation offers a wide variety of unique scholarship opportunities that average students have a real chance at winning. The Foundation offers approximately 35 academic and general knowledge scholarship opportunities throughout the year. The Foundation has also developed and administers the FBI-SOS (Safe Online Surfing) challenge, an internet safety program aimed at educating middle school students about the dangers associated with the internet and online predators.

Daryl Hulce can be reached at 954-262-8553

Jeff Green can be reached by contacting Judy Orihuela, Miami FBI Office at 305-944-9101.

PostHeaderIcon Global IPTV Revenue Will Top $17 Billion by 2010

Global IPTV Revenue Will Top $ 17 Billion by 2010

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) January 17, 2005

IPTV, or the distribution of a television service over broadband access lines, will take a turn towards full commercial deployment in 2005. The 2004 launch of services such as Maligne TV and CanalSat DSL in France, FastWeb in Italy, and the announced 2005 TV-over-DSL launch by BellSouth, SBC and Verizon in the United States have propelled this new technology onto the front page of industry attention. “The Business of IPTV: Global Analysis & Forecasts,” a new study from TDG Research, suggests that the majority of global IPTV growth will be fueled by hybrid deployments that combine digital satellite or terrestrial TV services with IP-based TelcoTV offerings.

The television markets around the world vary greatly in terms of incumbent pay television offerings and broadband penetration, says Hervé Utheza, consulting analyst with TDG Research and a digital media industry executive. The chances of TelcoTVs success will vary greatly depending upon the extent to which these two services have penetrated individual geographic markets. In other words, when it comes to identifying the real opportunities for IPTV on a global basis, understanding the specificities of the regional markets is paramount. Hence, our new study covers three specific geographic regions and 28 countries.

Other important findings of the study include:

Â?    Worldwide IPTV subscribers will pass the 20 million mark around 2010, a volume dominated by hybrid architectures deployments as opposed to stand-alone TelcoTV VoDSL solutions. IPTV-generated revenue will experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 102% between year-end 2004 and year-end 2010.

Â?    The cross-over point between MPEG-2 video transmission bandwidths and sustained broadband access bandwidths in volume deployments has now been reached, making it possible to deliver a quality digital video service to consumers over a broadband connection. Moreover, more efficient video codec chipsets are now starting to be available in ASIC technology thus making it possible for consumer premise equipment (CPE) to reach low-cost, volume-deployment level prices.

Â?    The power of IP as a digital video transport technology will rapidly expand beyond TelcoTV operators to affect multiple network topologies. Satellite operators will augment their broadcast offerings with IPTV-based Â?on-demandÂ? services in order to compete with cable TV players. Additionally, Digital Terrestrial Television or DTT adoption will also benefit greatly from IPTV-based premium offerings.

Â?    For satellite TV service operators, IPTV will provide a means of extending their current broadcast offering to including on-demand movies and programming, thus allowing them to compete with cableÂ?s new video-on-demand services. IPTV and its more efficient codec technologies are also expected to facilitate the continued growth of HDTV channels, while being poised to enable an extension of their core DBS service beyond the satellite set-top box Â? for example, to mobile consumer devices connecting to the main satellite receiver.

Â?    For cable operators, IPTV technologies will play a determining role in the advent of cheaper set-top boxes (STBs), network equipment, and multiplexing devices. In the United States, the New Generation Network Architecture (or NGNA) effort led by CableLabs will be the foundation for the extension of IP-based core networks, able to indifferently deliver video, data and voice over the same network equipment, as close as possible to the consumer home, thus reducing the Â?last-mileÂ? plant investment.

Â?    The primary competitive determinants for consumer adoption will be (1) breadth of content offerings, (2) pricing of services, and (3) creation of unique compelling bundled offerings.

Â?    Early IPTV differentiators will include an Â?a la carteÂ? pricing model, a move that will put pressure on the traditional business practices of incumbent PayTV operators.

Â?    TelcoTV adoption around the world will vary greatly, as the penetration of PayTV and broadband differs. In markets such as the United States where PayTV penetration approximates 80%, careful attention must be given to program pricing and packaging, as well as identifying specific target markets.

Â?    Despite the increased use of IP-based video transport technologies, independent web sites and Internet-based IP TV and video services will remain a niche proposition and may be aggregated or acquired by the larger IPTV operators.

TDGÂ?s new IPTV competitive analysis and forecast, “The Business of IPTV: Global Analysis & Forecasts,” is the most comprehensive treatment of global IP-video opportunities available today. The analysis combines a critical examination of the business of IPTV, deconstructing more than fifteen existing IPTV service vendors, the economics of various network and CPE configurations, and detailed forecasts for 28 countries in North America, Europe, and AsiaPac. The report also includes provisional profit/loss analyses using three different incumbent PayTV and broadband penetration models.

Private Grants and Scholarships Dull the Sting of Higher Tuition Costs.

(PRWEB) March 7, 2003

At a time when unemployment is high, personal income is flat, and college-level education is a requirement for most well-paying jobs, public colleges continue to become less affordable for Texas residents.

A slow economy has caused a sharp drop in college and university state spending. According to The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, public four-year college tuition in Texas has increased 20%. The result, a higher cost for higher education.

“However, there is money available for the diligent,” assures Monica Wheeler author of the new e-resource guide 35 Practical Ways to Get Money for College, “Total state financial aid has been raised from $ 257.7 million to $ 310.5 million to compensate for the higher cost. State grants and scholarships offered through the private sector are available to help pay increasing tuition cost.”

Awards, need and merit based, are usually categorized by geographic location, special interest, or major career fields. “Since criteria are specific, finding the right award can be tedious- but considering the current economic recession, well worth the effort,” explains Wheeler. She advises exploring the following options for a productive grant and scholarship search:

1. Guidance Counselor – High School Guidance Counselors are on the front lines with access to information on numerous awards. Start, but don?t end your search at their office door.

2. Online Search-The Internet has emerged as a key source of scholarship information. The following are a handful of helpful sites.

http://www.wiredscholar.com Wired Scholar has one of the internet?s largest databases of financial aid.

http://www.fastweb.com FastWeb allows you to search 600,000 scholarships worth over $ 1 billion dollars.

http://www.brokescholar.com The BrokeScholar database matches student profiles with more than 900,000 scholarships worth over $ 3 billion to find the most relevant and obtainable opportunities. They also feature a personalized deadline calendar.

http://www.collegeboard.com The College Board is a trusted source that offers a search with 2,000 scholarships, internships, and loan programs.

3. Public and School Libraries-While you want to use the Internet for searches; there is a lot of competition. Got to local libraries and check with the reference desk for institutional, and private student aid scholarship directories. Most of the awards listed are duplicated online, but not all. By investing time to thumb through the telephone-directory-sized books you may find one or two the competition will miss.

4. Local Organizations -There is a better chance of winning money from local organizations such as churches, clubs, community groups, and unions since fewer students are likely to apply. Look specifically for local chapters of larger, national organizations that often give money to students living in certain areas.

5. Place of Employment-Employers may also offer grants and scholarships. Inquire at your personnel office. Dependent students should ask their parent or legal guardian to check the availability of awards.

6. Announcements -Keep your eyes open. Take time to read bulletin boards, posters, and articles in newspapers for competition announcements. Some scholarships are episodic and may occur only once.

“However, there is money available for the diligent, assures Monica Wheeler author of the new e-resource guide 35 Practical Ways to Get Money for College, “Total state financial aid has been raised substantially from $ 99.6 million to $ 192.9 million to compensate for the higher cost. These state grants and scholarships offered through the private sector are available to pay increasing tuition cost.”

They also feature a personalized deadline calendar.

http://www.collegeboard.com The College Board is a trusted source that offers a search with 2,000 scholarships, internships, and loan programs

3. Public and School Libraries-While you want to use the Internet for searches; there is a lot of competition. Got to local libraries and check with the reference desk for state government, institutional, and private student aid scholarship directories.
