PostHeaderIcon Is it possible to upgrade the processor and motherboard of existing HP desktops?

I understand the warranty would be void by upgrading the processor or motherboard, but I’m curious if it’s physically possible? For example, if I have a Quad core desktop, and in the future want to upgrade to the new Intel i7 processor which requires a different motherboard, will the new motherboard and processor fit inside the HP tower? And will other components like memory, graphics card and drives fit in their as well?

Well, u cant upgrade to a corei7, they use a compltely different socket… if u want a core i7 u will need a new mobo, new Ram (cuz i7 only supports Triple channel Ram) u will need a new graphic card, cuz i7 mobos dont have onboard graphics… sooo if u do all that, it would just be better to completely built your comp from teh ground up

PostHeaderIcon Are all desktops compatible with any video/graphics cards?

I just got a desktop and im planning to change the video card to something better.. Will all the video cards be compatible with my hp desktop and vice versa?

no….not knowing what you have for a pc I can tell you that certain cards will only work in systems with certain processor speeds and certain amounts of ram. Not only that but certain types of pci slots.

PostHeaderIcon What is the current Linux market share, including servers, desktops, laptops, and every other variety?

i.e. servers, desktops, laptops, supercomputers, E-book readers, video game systems such as the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, several arcade games, and embedded devices such as mobile phones and routers.

Like compared to Windows and Mac and their few varieties.

I don’t think anyone is going to have statistics for all of these. Linux is over 50% on web servers on the internet. I think I saw about 15-20% of corporate servers, I’d guess maybe 4 to 5% desktops/laptops. 75% of the new "netbooks" zero PS2, a few people have installed on PS3, but it sucks… Motorola has quite a few cell phones based on linux. Linksys, by far the most popular "home router" is linux based, so maybe 75%. Lots of corporate routers are Linux based, lots of corporations just linux boxes for routers and VPN solutions. Tivo is linux based, many MP3 players are open-source based for their mp3 and ogg/vorbis decoders.

Compared to windows where maybe 70% corporate servers, 80% desktop, 3 to 5% of the routers (Only windows serve boxes running microsoft proxy server would be counted.) maybe 40% of the web servers, a few percent of cell phones if you count windows mobile as windows.

Mac, probably 15% of home desktops/laptops, 4 to 5% corporate desktops, 1 or 2% internet servers, no routers, all the iphones.

PostHeaderIcon Where do I start with purchasing desktops for Servers / Workstations?

I need a Server/Workstation and 6 workstations. The Server needs about 80 GB hard drive. I have the flatscreens already. I’m looking for the cheapest, most reliable computer out there, and don’t know where to start.

the cheapest most reliable computer is often the one you build yourself. you remove the middle man and get great deals
