PostHeaderIcon Where can I restore my laptop desktop icons and the start buttom?

I tried to change the password on my laptop and accidentally pressed a button, and now all my desktop icons are missing, and the start button at the bottom of the screen. Whenever the laptop starts up the screen doesn’t show anything. Where can I restore my desktop icons and the task bar? Thank you..

You may try this.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and choose Task Manager, Windows Task Manager will display.

At Applications tab, click on New Task at the bottom, and type "explorer" in the form, then press OK.

Hope this help :)

PostHeaderIcon Are all desktops compatible with any video/graphics cards?

I just got a desktop and im planning to change the video card to something better.. Will all the video cards be compatible with my hp desktop and vice versa?

no….not knowing what you have for a pc I can tell you that certain cards will only work in systems with certain processor speeds and certain amounts of ram. Not only that but certain types of pci slots.

PostHeaderIcon Will my desktop pc crash if i leave it constantly on ?

I do torrent downloading, and most people should know that you have to leave your computer on & running most of the time. But i have a little fear that my desktop pc will crash soon. Will it crash if i leave it on constantly ?

Yes, a time will arrive when there will be too much "temporary" memory stored, and eventually it will "crash".

PostHeaderIcon how do you know what computer components will work together when building a computer from scratch?

yeah, i’m trying to build a computer and i need to know what motherboard would work with whatever else and everything in general.

CPU sockets must match. (Ex—- LGA 1156 CPU with an LGA 1156 sock motherboard)
RAM slots and RAM must match. (Ex—- DDR3 memory for DDR3 slots)
PCI-express video card for a PCI-Express slot.
SATA hard drive for a SATA connection on the motherboard.
Power supply must be strong enough to power all components.

If you’re just starting out, study the combo deals at Newegg, and look for patterns.

PostHeaderIcon What is the best Notebook PC/laptop brand out there?

I will be getting a new Notebook PC/laptop by October. I have made a lot of research and so far HP tops the list in terms of specifications & reviews. I’m not a very brand conscious person however its one of the factors i consider. Most branded laptops have been proven on the highest quality & could last a very long time. I would highly appreciate your inputs.

That’s a very personal question. You really have to go to the store and feel them for yourself. Sometimes the keys will be mushier than others, HP’s have glossy smooth keyboards and a dimpled textured touchpad. Most other manufacturers have a soft textured keyboard and touchpad. Sony keyboards usually feel a little less confident in their responsiveness. Also if you absolutely have to have a trackpoint then you’ll need an IBM or Lenovo. In the end it will really come down to personal preference for you and what features you want. Don’t forget though that size and weight are features if you’re planning to carry the laptop anywhere, a lot of people overlook that and just go for performance. But if you’re not going to carry it around you spent too much money on a laptop when you could’ve gotten a better performing desktop.

Personally I have a 5 year old Dell Inspiron with a 15 inch screen, and a 8 month old HP Pavillion with a 12 inch screen. I’m definitely more willing to put the HP in a bag and take it with me than I was with the Dell, and I’ve become comfortable to the glossy keyboard which really makes me want to touch it. Both are very sturdy and decently performing units, but the HP has a lot more style to it compared to the Dell.

Any way you go, whether it’s Lenovo, HP, Dell, Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, or Apple, you won’t likely get any disrespect from other laptop users, they are all capable units ready for life with a road warrior or a student taking notes in class. When you know the specs you want, go with your heart on the rest if there are comparable units.

NO WAY!!!!!

You can get a Toshiba for that price — better quality.
you could get a Dell or HP for that price NEW!!!

The only thing youre really getting is the media center and another GB of RAM–whichisnt worth a refurbished computer, and a company like gateway when you can get a new one for that price.

I just bought dual Core Centrino, 1GB, XP MEDIA CENTER, 120 HD, wireless, etc for 750. TOSHIBA NEW!!!
If I want I could get another GB RAM for 75 bucks, but it would still be better than a gateway..and moreso better than a gateway thats been refurbished.

And the guy that tried to say GATEWAY desktops are good — take a look at PC reviews and see how low Gateway usually ranks compared to the other companies

PostHeaderIcon How do I start a remote desktop session on Solaris? I have my display exported?

I have my X display exported to my laptop and I have an xterm on the solaris server. I want to fire up a "desktop" session that displays on my laptop. What command (s) do I need to run to do that?

By "desktop" session I mean I want to see something like what I would see if I was at the actual console of the server. It doesn’t have to be the actual console, but something similar to it.

Since you know about $DISPLAY, you obviously know
how to remotely display specific applications
like "xterm". To get an entire "desktop" (ie. a
window manager), use "vnc".

This software is available on the "companion CD"

The basic idea is to start "vncserver" on the
remote machine.

fee $ rlogin foo
foo $ vncserver

and then use the vnc client on your local machine:

fee $ vncviewer -shared foo:1

Because the default window manager is "twm", I
also created the file $HOME/.vnc/xstartup to
contain the following so that my "desktop" would
be gnome:

———————————————————————-
#!/bin/sh

xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
xterm -geometry 80×24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
/usr/bin/gnome-session &
———————————————————————-

I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ve heard the claim
that the OpenSolaris X server supports this
directly (ie. so that you don’t have to start
"vncserver" on the remote machine).

A couple of nice features to this is that it
allows you to share a desktop with someone who is
collaborating with you. Similarly, it allows you
to "join" your own existing desktop when you go
home from work at night

Definitely see the reference below.
